Blaney, Private Edwin R. (1844 -1863), Enlisted on August 8, 1862  at age 18 and served in Captain Kimball’s Company G, 96th Regiment OVI, was mustered out February 14, 1863 at St. Louis, Missouri and died of disease in St. Louis Hospital on February 14, 1863. Listed on Roll of Honor of Ohio Soldiers, His mother, Betsy Harbottle, applied for his pension.  He is buried in East Liberty Cemetery, Porter Township, Delaware County, Ohio

Budd, George W., 1840-1863, served in Company G, lst Battalion, 15th Regiment, USA, served in Battles of Shiloh, Corinth, Stone River, and Chickamauga, died in 1863, buried in Harlem Cemetery

Burna, Private James M. (1844-1864) Company K, 121st Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, was a grandson of Nathaniel and Phoebe Rosecrans Roloson.  He entered the service on August 20, 1862.  He was taken prisoner at Chickamauga on September 20, 1863.  He died at the age of twenty on August 14, 1864 in Andersonville, Georgia prison. Burna died in Defense of the Union and is on the Roll of Honor of Ohio Soldiers. He is buried in Berkshire Cemetery.

Carnes, Private Emmitt (1847-1929), enlisted on January 22, 1864 at age 18, in Company O, 96th Battalion Regiment, served in battles: Sabine Cross Roads, Cane River, Fort Gaines, Fort Morgan, Spanish Fort, Fort Blakely, Mobile, and Whistler. Was  transferred to Company D, 96th OVI on November 18, 1864 and to Company A, 77th Regiment, OVI, on July 6, 1865, and mustered out March 8, 1866   His address on 96th list was Kingston Center, Ohio. Occupation- Carnes’ great granddaughter, Jackie Covert, said he was in the horse business (driving horses) after the war. He buried in East Liberty Cemetery, Porter Township, Delaware County, Ohio

Fuller, Sergeant Hiram C. (__-1862) Company I, 32nd Regiment, OVI, on September 15, 1862, he was wounded in the shoulder by enemy shell a few moments before surrender at Harper’s Ferry. He spent 5 days in the hospital, made his way home to Berkshire where he died of lockjaw at the age of 36 on October 8, 1862 and is buried in Berkshire Cemetery.  Fuller is on the Roll of Honor of Ohio Soldiers

The town and county of Norton, Kansas was named in his honor.  Norton was born in 1837 and was on the 1850 census as living in Berkshire. Some of his family is buried in Berkshire Cemetery and Norton was brought back and buried in Berkshire Cemetery.

Roloson, Private Simon  (about 1838-1863) Company I, 4th Regiment, OVI, served at Harpers Ferry, Rich Mountain, Romney, Virginia, and other battles.  At age 21, Simon died on July 2, 1863 in the Battle of Gettysburg along with fellow Delaware Countian, Private Willie Brefogle, where their unit fought along Cemetery  Ridge.  Simon and Lemuel Roloson were sons of Joseph and Margaret Roloson.  Simon is buried in Berkshire Cemetery.     Serving in Simon’s regiment were Private Thomas E. Stark (1838-1922) and Corporal Addison Roloson who are also buried in Berkshire Cemetery. Simon’s relative, Private Wesley Roloson, served in the same unit but is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in Delaware, Ohio.

(1843-1911) Ohio, Company E, 121st Regiment & Company H, 121st Regiment, OVI, sent to Covington, Kentucky where given condemned Austrian rifles, served in Battles of Chickamauga, Lookout Mountain, and Mission Ridge, joined General Sherman in Rome, Georgia and served with Sherman’s march to the sea, served in Carolina battles, and on to Grand Review in Washington, D. C., discharged at Columbus, Ohio, buried in Sunbury Memorial Park in Sunbury, Delaware County, Ohio (Ken Crowl has seen his grave with another wife in Prospect Cemetery)

Walker,  Private John W.  (1845-1862) Ohio, served in Company H, 121st Regiment, OVI, died of typhoid fever at Camp Gilbert, Columbia, Kentucky, buried in Sunbury Memorial Park in Sunbury, Delaware County, Ohio.  (He was a farmer, description: gray eyes, dark hair, light complexion, 5 feet, 9 ½ inches tall) (have copy of letter Capt. Peter Cockerell sent to John’s father about his death in Kentucky)

Wright, Private Arthur P., 1839-1863, served in the 113th Regiment, OVI, served in Kentucky and Tennessee; possibly lost in Chickamauga, buried in Fancher Cemetery, Harlem Township, Delaware County, Ohio

Wright, 1st Sergeant Charles (1840-1899).  Enlisted as a Corporal August 6, 1862 in Company D, 91st Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry,  Discharged June 24, 1865.  Buried in Trenton Cemetery, New Section , Lot 21, Grave 5,Condit, Delaware County, Ohio

Although not from Eastern Delaware County, these two soldiers show prison conditions which many suffered.
James Birney Hodges, 1844-1924, Ohio, Enlisted in 66th Regiment, OVI, in November 1861 at the age of 17, wounded in Battle of Port Republic, sent to Lynchburg Prison, then to Belle Isle Prison, incapacitated from gunshot wounds and then released in prisoner exchange, hospitalized in Baltimore, sent to Camp Tyler for 3 months convalescence. In August 1864, Hodges became an orderly at lst Brigade, 2nd Division, 20th Army Corps, discharged at Savannah in December 1864, returned to Delaware County to farm family farm, buried in Radnor Cemetery

Morton Post, 1807-1892, Ohio, enlisted in 1861 at Delaware, served in 66th Regiment, OVI, captured at Battle of Port Republic and sent to Belle Isle Prison, released so debilitated that he was discharged from unit on Surgeon’s Certificate of Disability, lived at Soldiers Home in Dayton in 1880’s, then went to veterans hospital in Washington, D. C., buried in Arlington Cemetery

Powell, Brigadier General Eugene, (1845 -1915) Ohio, Field and Staff, 193rd Regiment OVI, also served in 66th OVI and in lst Brigade, 2nd Division, 20th Army Corp, shown as buried in Sunbury Memorial Park but is actually in Greenlawn Cemetery in Franklin County, Ohio

         
 

Kingston and Porter Residents Buried Outside the Area

Carney, Thomas Leroy, _____- Jan. 31, 1863, Company F, 96th OVI, Wounded at Chickasa Bayou and then got measles, died at Youngs Point, Louisiana, buried along the Mississippi River, grave washed away from high water. Grew up in Kingston Township. Information from relative, Florobel Lacher.
 
Croy, Private John, Company B, 18th U. S. Infantry, died and buried at Andersonville Prison, August 9, 1864. Former Kingston Township resident and relative of Florobel Lacher.
 
Croy, Matthais, served in Civil War, died June 13, 1863 at Millikens Bend, Louisiana, brother of John Croy.  Former Kingston Township resident and relative of Florobel Lacher.

Gray, James, 1840-  served in Company E, 6th Michigan Volunteer Infantry, died in Andersonville Prison.

Harbottle, Corporal Richard, 1844-1903, enlisted at Cincinnati, Ohio Company I, 13th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, served on the Eastern Front where his unit destroyed the Confederate railroad supply line, promoted to Corporal January 1, 1865,  kicked by a horse and was in Washington, D. C. hospital when President Abraham Lincoln was killed.  Harbottle saw Lincoln’s funeral procession, Harbottle buried in Green Mound Cemetery in Kilbourne.
