   Honoring WWII Veterans

        In Sunbury Memorial Cemetery

Big Walnut Middle School Students helped Big Walnut Area Historical Society mark World War Two Veterans' Graves in Sunbury Memorial Park on April 15, 2016, as part of their Community Service Day.  American Legion and Veteran's Services provided flags and flag holders.

Members of BWAHS started marking veterans graves with soldiers who fought in the American Revolution in 2006 in all the cemeteries in the Big Walnut school district.  It soon became apparent they needed help so Suzanne Allen recruited her Sunbury Halter and Saddle 4-H Club to help honor the veterans.   The project has continued each Memorial Day and Veteran's Day as they worked through the different wars.   After they do Berkshire and Trenton Cemeteries for Memorial Day and Veteran's Day in 2016, all WWII veteran's graves will be done.

A student read about the veteran's service to our country at each grave and replaced the flag holder and flag if they were missing.  Warren Owen and Suzanne Allen had located the graves and marked them over the past week.  Susanne Allen pictured at the right foreground above, researched each veteran to provide the history for the students.

WWII Veteran Bob Cheadle in his uniform, left, with Members of Sunbury Halter and Saddle 4-H CLub, American Legion Post  and Big Walnut Area Historical Society honored part of the WWII veterans buried in Sunbury Memorial Park.   The project will continue on Memorial Day.

Big Walnut Area Historical Society Trustee and Army Paratrooper
Veteran Bob Cheadle served in both WWII and the Korean War

During the program he told of having to fly in a plane without being assigned to do so and then realizing there was a problem so he told all the men to jump.  When the others had done so he also jumped and then heard the plane explode.  Cheadle's parachute caught is a tree.  As night was approaching he tried to determine the distance to the ground but was unable to determine if it was safe to try to drop down.  When help had not come the next morning, he slowly let himself slide to the end of  his rope then dropped to the ground safely.  He determined the general direction of base and started walking.  When he returned to base he was AWOL because no one knew he was on the plane and he had not shown up for roll call.

Cheadle called forth the spirits of his comrades who gave their lives in the war.  He remembers their faces and feels their presence as their graves are marked.   He and the other attending veterans saluted these brave men.

Cheadle answered questions from the audience and when it was time to move on, Cheadle and the Veterans again saluted the Spirits and dismissed them.
